Reviewing: Urban Land Magazine

The Urban Land Magazine is the official magazine of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) with a focus on real estate, development, urbanization, and land use. The magazine began its circulation in 1941. The publication is available online at no cost and also in print, which is only available to members of ULI. Additionally, all articles are readily available online, which makes them easy to read anywhere and share with colleagues. Their articles are also archived, so earlier pieces can easily be found again or for the first time.

One of my favorite things about the Urban Land Magazine is the depth and breadth of content. It’s always on the forefront of issues affecting national and global land use. ULI has divisions for the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europe. Articles are rigorously researched and well written. Below are several articles I recommend for a taste of what the Urban Land Magazine has to offer:

So who’s behind the scenes of this publication and where are the articles coming from? The majority of authors appear to be from outside the ULI organization. It’s refreshing to know that there isn’t a hidden agenda lurking beneath the surface and that viewpoints are a mashup of different backgrounds, perspectives, and regions. Some of the regular contributors to the magazine are Kevin Brass, Will Macht, and Susan Persin. Kevin Brass brings his expertise from writing for the International New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and The National. He specializes in issues concerning property and development, architecture, and design. Will Macht is currently the president of Macht & Company, a frequent ULI contributor, and adjunct professor at Portland State University teaching real estate development and planning. Susan Persin is currently Senior Director of Research at Trepp, a provider of services for the CMBS, real estate, and banking industries. Another notable contributor is Orest Mandzy, managing editor at Commercial Real Estate Direct, which offers daily commercial real estate news and data.

There’s no contender to the size, scope, and coverage of the ULI organization, and the authoritative voice that comes from such a well-established group. Full of engaging content, there’s no doubt that I would recommend ULI’s Urban Land Magazine as a part of your regular information diet.
